OK, I know there are a million gimmicks on how to get “toned” abs out there and I mean this to be nothing of the sort. Frankly, I care far more about you functionally moving with ease and power than being able to do laundry on your abs. But wait, it just so happens that when you train functionally you get the best of both worlds! Have you ever seen a gymnast with a flabby belly? They do not achieve this with sit-ups, instead it comes from using the mid-section as the stabilizer that it is. Our society is paralyzing itself by perpetually crunching and folding forward. This is not the main function of the spine and our ab work must reflect that if we want toned and functional bellies.
